As delegates and lobbyists gather in Dubai for COP 28, the United Nations climate change conference, the Messy Church team have relaunched – ‘A Rubbish Messy Church session’. Written in conjunction with Tearfund (who are attending COP28), we have re-cycled the Bintwinning session and added 2 new activities: ideas on how to write a letter to the UK government to influence policy makers around plastic pollution and how to make a heart badge out of crisp packets.
By (re)visiting the Genesis creation story, this session explores the biblical mandate to care for creation and see this as an act of worship to God, drawing us closer to the Creator, and providing a way to live out our discipleship and love our neighbours, wherever they live in the world.
Globally, two billion people do not have access to waste management. As well as challenging ourselves to reduce our waste, reuse and recycle what we already have, supporting waste projects, like the ones run by Tearfund highlighted in this session, is a practical way to show love, and support our global neighbours dispose of their waste and protect the environment.
Speaking up and calling for a global agreement on plastic pollution is another way we can clean up our world and make a difference to mend our broken relationship with creation.
