Mexican and Peruvian dancers at Colorado Messy Church

Published 8th January 2015 by jane leadbetter

Great to hear from Rev Carol Meredith at St Stephens Episcopal Church, Aurora, Colorado. Since July 2014 they have been joining up with their Latino neighbours for Messy Church and at Christmas they all explored Mexican Christmas traditions together.
First, 150 all ages celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe, making rosaries, paper flowers and Christmas ornaments to decorate a special Altar to Our Lady. They had Mexican dancers and food.
Next they held a Messy Church and Posada – Las Posadas – the journey of Mary and Joseph looking for an inn (Posada). They all went outside to sing Las Posadas song and were then told to ‘go away!’ When they were welcomed in the Bishop blessed them and Peruvian dancers and congregation danced before the altar. It finished with Fiesta food and pinatas! Rev Carol said ‘There was chaos, mess and learning about God’s gift of light and love. But everyone especially enjoyed hearing that now, because of Jesus, God lives in our hearts and sharing new traditions with new friends.’
